Job Summary:
Under the general direction of the Recreation Manager, the employee is responsible for coordinating community recreation programs. Work includes the planning, organizing and directing of a comprehensive recreation program, the organizing and promoting of activities and camps, the maintaining of program and facility safety, coordination of the programs, operations and supervision of related personnel of the assigned recreation facility. Work is reviewed through performance evaluations of accomplished goals, projects, and programs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Oversees community recreation programs that may include sports, camps, after school programs, community recreation classes, department promotional materials, senior programs, teen programs etc. Communicates with program leadership staff to ensure that program guidelines and rules are followed;

Plans, coordinates, supervises and conducts specialized recreational activities in such areas as cultural arts, community programs, or therapeutics to achieve departmental and community service goals. Assists with development and implementation of short and long-term department visionary plans;

Plans, assigns, supervises and evaluates the work of part time and seasonal staff; oversees the hiring of new employees, conducts interviews, trains and develops staff; maintains employee records;

Assesses employees’ performance and prepares evaluations, recommends and develops training as needed with approval of the Recreation Manager;

Reviews and recommends to the Director that eligible applicants be hired and that subordinate employees be transferred, suspended, promoted, terminated, reassigned or disciplined in the best interest of the program unit and the department;

Coordinates community wide fund raising activities to support and expand leisure service programs;

Manages, raises awareness and coordinates advertisement of the Care Enough to Share Scholarship Fund. Acts as a liaison to community partners to promote and enhance programs for area youth;

Prepares publicity on recreational activities and programs; solicits active interest, participation and support of neighborhood and community groups. Coordinates flyers and website and social media updates to assist with marketing and promotion of services;

Updates and maintains current Parks & Recreation Fee Schedule to be presented to Mayor, City Council and disseminated to the public. Surveys competitors'''' attractions. Assists the Marketing Coordinator with the production and distribution of the Activity Guide three times per year;

Compiles survey results and department reports for the Recreation Manager, Department Director, and Parks and Recreation Commission;

Coordinates outside instructors’ contracts to ensure insurance requirements, tax and residential information and background screenings are up to date. Oversees the performance of the outside instructors, collection of revenue, class requirements, etc., as outlined in the contract. Creates schedules at community center, administers class rosters and training on website use, and assigns department policies to all class instructors;

Oversees collecting of and accounting for fees, charges and disbursements; deposits collected monies; maintains records of revenues, expenses and deposits;

In coordination with management, develops and implements administrative policies regarding recreation program registration and recreation program instructor procedures;

Coordinates summer recreation camps for children; including Outdoor Adventure Camp, Camp Mer-IDA-Moo, Let’s Play Sports Camp and Art Camp;

Plans and implements activities, field trips, transportation, food items, guest speakers, field trips, etc. Records and maintains supply inventory and performs purchasing duties;

Monitors camps/class registrations and trends, and develops educational curriculums accordingly. Coordinates training, development and implementation of programming among recreation division seasonal camp staff;

Works with Recreation Division staff in developing programming models for all summer camp programs and locations;

Collects feedback from campers, parents, and staff to improve programs offered. Maintains and fosters partnerships with West Ada School District administration and staff;

Responds to inquiries and complaints from the general public; arranges for public notification of recreation programs and events;

Assist as a back-up receptionist and telephone console operator, receiving and transferring of incoming calls, taking telephone registration information, and provides general Department information as required;

Develops, administers, and reviews budgets for all programs under supervision. Ensures planning and alignment of activities fall within budget constraints;

Manages all operational aspects of the Meridian Community Center, program schedules, instructor access, janitorial contract, and coordinates all maintenance needs with parks maintenance staff to ensure programs are safe and educational for youth and adults of all ages, developmental ranges, economic, cultural and/or social backgrounds;

Perform other related duties as assigned or needed.

Job Specifications:

Bachelors Degree in Recreation or Leisure Services or related field of study; and/or three years of progressively responsible experience in recreation and/or leisure services, one year of which must have been at the supervisory level; or equivalent combination of training and experience;

Must be CPR and First Aid certified or the ability to become certified within 30 days of hire, have good public relations skill, and be a good organizer;

Must be able to work evenings and weekends;

Must display an attitude of cooperation and the ability to work well with others and work as a team player;

Ability to act in an emergency;

Ability to communicate with management, co-workers and general public with respect and in a pleasant, courteous manner;

Integrity, in the performance of assigned tasks;

Must be able to use department’s registration software or have the ability to learn navigation of the program within 3 months of hire.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to temperature changes, night lighting and is subject to outside environmental conditions;

Constantly requires clarity of speech and hearing, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;

Constantly requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in an outside environment to accomplish tasks.

Occasionally requires driving a motor vehicle;

Occasionally requires lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
