Job Summary:
The Parks Maintenance Assistant Manager reports directly to the Parks Maintenance Manager and is responsible for all aspects of the Parks Maintenance Manager’s responsibilities in his absence. In addition, oversees a wide variety of design and fabrication projects on city equipment and park property. Work involves supervision of employees, inventory management, equipment, and resource procurement, along with skillful operation of equipment and a variety of hand and power tools for projects and maintenance items. Instructions are received in the form of oral or written directives or activity schedules with the expectation that tasks be completed independently or with other team members. Work performed is evaluated by the Parks Maintenance Manager through reports and by the timely completion of assignments.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Supervise, plan, prioritize, assign, train, approve timecards and evaluate work performed by Maintenance Technicians, Seasonal, and part-time staff;
Responsible for multiple budget lines and issues Purchase Orders;
Order supplies, maintain schedules;
Reviews spreadsheets and delegates to Maintenance Technicians, work performed by court appointed personnel, volunteers and Eagle Scout projects;
Oversee multiple contracted services;
Interview, select, and coordinate vendors/ contractors for scheduled/ unscheduled maintenance;
Supervise safe operation of maintenance and construction equipment;
Coordinate inspections: assign staff for repairs and order parts;
Supervise preventive maintenance on parks equipment;
Highly advanced knowledge of irrigation principles and equipment:
Tracks and oversees maintenance to all parks equipment, facilities and grounds;
Reviews budgets; orders chemicals and fertilizers and ensures staff are properly trained on application rates;
Calculates fill material for park projects i.e. infields, playgrounds, etc.;
Oversee and schedule spring startups and winterization of all parks facilities;
Oversees the design and fabrication of park amenities, either through engineered specifications or design build;
Highly skilled with steel, wood, plastics and other materials;
Oversees the Operation of various equipment to design, fabricate and repair amenities and equipment including but not limited to: Oxygen/Acetylene, MIG, TIG, Arc Welding and Plasma Cutting;
Oversee the maintenance and repairs to city owned trucks and equipment used in the operation of parks maintenance procedures;
Second in command for all facility and yard management;
Vehicle and equipment purchasing, licensing, capital replacements and asset disposal;
Accepts deliveries, organizes shop grounds and controls placement of inventory;
Trains staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment;
Ensures the proper utilization of safety precautions related to all work performed;
Operates city trucks, power tools and equipment;
Operate and maintain tools, vehicles, equipment, and trailers safely and obey all traffic laws;
Performs other tasks as assigned or needed.
Job Specifications:
High school education or equivalent, plus five (5) years parks grounds maintenance and or landscape construction experience;
Three (3) years supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Operational knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software;
Knowledge and ability to oversee safe operation of equipment in conformance with applicable laws and regulations;
Proficient in measuring and calibrating;
Ability to fabricate metal, wood, plastics and other materials;
Knowledge of park rules, processes and procedures for maintaining recreational facilities and buildings;
Ability to make independent judgments and decisions;
Work with minimum direct supervision;
Ability to work outdoors for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions;
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with respect to other employees, supervisors and the general public;
Ability to provide quality services in a cost-effective manner and to recommend improved methodology;
Communicate with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations;
Ability to maintain integrity in the performance of assigned tasks;
Must display an attitude of cooperation and the ability to work well with others;
Licensing and Certification:
Possession of valid driver’s license and safe driving record;
Class A CDL or the ability to obtain within 12 months after the date of hire.
City of Meridian Irrigation Technician: Pass Exam III and Field Test within 6 months after date of hire.
Current Idaho Professional Applicator License with Following Endorsements:
-CO: Applicator Core Competency
-OP: Ornamental Pest;
Additional Applicator endorsement in one of the following, to be obtained within 6 months after the date of hire:
-CH: Chemigation;
-IP: Industrial, institutional, and structural pest control-non-commodity
-AP: Aquatic Weed and Pest Control;
-RW: Right of Way Herbicide;
Preferred Certification(s):
-CPSI: Certified Playground Safety Inspector;
-Bachelors, Associates, or Certificate in horticultural approved field;
-Maxicom Operator/Technician Certification;
-CLT: Certified Landscape Technician in approved discipline;
-Certified Arborist;
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud;
Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration;
Constantly requires driving a motor vehicle or maintenance equipment;
Occasionally is exposed to risk of electrical shock;
Frequently requires lifting and moving up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves more than 100 pounds;
Required to know when to use proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
-When working in high precarious places;
-When exposed to hot or wet and/or humid conditions;
-When exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration;
-When exposed to risk of electrical shock;
-When required to lift or move up to 50 pounds, or move more than 100 pounds;
Travel Requirements:
Required to drive city motor vehicles to parks, places of business and other recreational facilities while hauling trailers and equipment, and be able to properly tie down loads and operate manual transmissions.
