Job Summary:
Performs duties to ensure that the Fire Department is supplied with necessary equipment, apparatus, supplies and servicing including repairs to operate efficiently and effectively. Work involves considerable public and employee contact, independent judgement and initiative. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Division Chief of Logistics.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Repairs, adjusts and maintains fire apparatus and all other mechanical and firefighting equipment;
Reads and comprehends specifications, blue prints and operational manuals pertaining to apparatus and equipment to ensure proper repairs, adjustments and maintenance;
Responsible for maintaining current knowledge on changing trends and developments affecting fire service equipment and apparatus;
Assists with creating budget objectives and documentation for the Logistics Division;
Diagnose defects in all equipment operation and is skilled in effecting repairs;
Uses a variety of hand tools and power tools for mechanical repair work;
Researches and recommends purchase of fire apparatus and equipment;
Enforces equipment standards to ensure compliance;
Performs, coordinates and makes recommendations for maintenance requests, repairs, and testing of fire apparatus and equipment;
Assist with all purchasing, maintenance, and final disposition of vehicles;
Assists with all purchasing and repairs of routine and critical firefighting equipment;
May respond to emergency incidents as Logistics support or as a Safety Officer;
Assesses breathing air supply needs and arranges for additional resources, if necessary during emergency incidents;
Monitors apparatus and equipment to ensure proper operation and performance during emergency operations;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications:
College graduate from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree (AA or AS) or any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job;
Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a fire department, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of firefighting principles, practices, safety precautions and occupational hazards related to the work;
Understanding of operating principles and construction of fire apparatus, pumps, motor vehicles, air compressors, self-contained breathing apparatus, hydraulic and electrical equipment and all other equipment relating to fire department operations;
Working knowledge of common tools, equipment, devices related to fire and emergency rescue operations;
Knowledge of maintenance requirements of emergency and rescue vehicles, tools, equipment, and related apparatus;
Knowledge of complex mathematics and equations;
Working knowledge of incident management, firefighting methods and operations, and emergency medical services;
Skilled in the use and care of a variety of hand tools and power tools;
Knowledge of NFPA standards pertaining to Apparatus, Equipment and PPE;
Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, codes and regulations for fire apparatus, fire equipment and firefighter safety;
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to learn other data base applications used by the Department and the City;
Knowledge of practices and techniques related to hazardous material storage;
Ability to plan an appropriate course of action to reach an objective; develop alternative solutions to problems;
Ability to make sound decisions quickly under pressure with ability to focus on a task and ignore distractions;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to interpret, apply and explain applicable standards;
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials;
Ability to maintain accurate records and files;
Ability to use initiative and independent judgment within general policy guidelines;
Ability to provide excellent customer service internal and external in accordance with Department Mission and Vision;
Ability to work in a team environment as a team player.
Licensing and Certification:
Possess a valid Idaho Class D Driver's license; CDL is preferred;
Basic Idaho EMT or higher required within 12 months of hire;
Completion of the Meridian Fire Department’s Engineer Development Program (EDP) and Officer Development Program (ODP) within 24 months of employment required;
ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 (all achievable online through FEMA) certification;
Scott Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus maintenance and overhaul certification required within 12 months of hire and required to maintain certification;
Fire Apparatus EVT Technician Level Il certification required within 36 months of hire and required to maintain certification;
TNT Extrication Equipment maintenance and overhaul certification required within 24 months of hire and required to maintain certification;
Hurst Extrication Equipment maintenance and overhaul certification required within 24 months of hire and required to maintain certification;
Bauer Compressor maintenance certification required within 18 months of hire and required to maintain certification.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Work is performed frequently in an office and field environment with moderate to high noise level;
The employee in this class is frequently subject to inside and outside environmental conditions;
Constantly requires driving a motor vehicle; individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record in order to attend meetings and reach job sites;
Constantly requires clear vision to read printed materials and hearing and speech to communicate in person, over the telephone or through a two-way radio system;
Constantly requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and /or fingers;
Constantly requires mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks;
Constantly lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 101 + lbs. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs. and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 101 + lbs.
Employee may be required to be on call and or called back in off duty in emergent situations.
Travel Requirements:
Local travel is regularly required;
Some regional or national travel may be required for training or meetings;
Drives to meetings and incident sites during on or off duty hours.
