Job Summary:
This is a leadership position responsible for the planning, budgeting, organizing daily maintenance operations. Responsibilities include turf management, equipment maintenance, golf cart maintenance, irrigation system repair and programming and clubhouse maintenance. This position will supervise daily maintenance functions at Lakeview Golf Course to ensure a safe, pleasant and efficient golf course operations and conditions. Must be available to work to work weekends as needed and have on-call availability. Work is performed under the directions and supervision of the Parks Superintendent, but extensive leeway is granted and independent judgment and initiative is imperative. This position will oversee and supervise the work of the Assistant Superintendent and other assigned personnel. Effective communication and working relationships with Director of Parks and Recreation, Head Golf Professional, Facility Manager other City employees, outside contractors, golf course patrons and the general public must exist and be present. The principal functions and duties of this position are performed both a general office and outdoor work environment. Must be available for weekend


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
•Prepares and oversees budget for golf maintenance including planning of capital improvements and equipment purchases, projecting costs of fertilizers, chemicals, top dress materials and projecting costs of equipment maintenance and replacement;
•Plans, supervises and evaluates the work of maintenance staff including providing approval for staff selection, monitoring work schedules, interviewing for new or vacant positions, providing direction when necessary, discipling as needed, managing conflict, rewarding employee performance when appropriate;
•Oversees the maintenance of all buildings and structures;
•Oversee the maintenance of equipment and golf carts;
•Conducts trainings to all maintenance staff in safe and efficient operations of mowers, grounds care, chemical mixing and spraying, irrigation projects, course construction projects, including training seasonal employees and proper preventive maintenance of equipment;
•Inspects golf course for disease, insect infestation and damage, oversees and supervises proper treatment;
•Determines and calculates appropriate amounts of fertilizer and pesticide for applications, calibrates sprayers and spreaders for efficiency and safety measures
•Maintains appropriate records for fertilizer and chemical applications and golf course maintenance schedules;
•Manages and oversees all golf course operations such as irrigation programming, daily mowing, trimming schedules, tree maintenance and mechanical necessities;
•Identifies and determines proper maintenance solutions to issues and/or potential problems that may arise, including course improvements and enhancements;
•Ensures public and operational safety means at the course;
•Establishes and maintains an effective and respectful work environment, maintains a working environment free of fear and intimidation;
•Listens to employee’s concerns with consideration and respect;
•Adapts to changes within business operation guidelines; work is accomplished in a positive and timely manner;
•Maintains a good working relationship with co-workers, peers, customers, neighborhood association members and City administration
•Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions to become and retain current on certifications, principles and practices;
•Communicates effectively with immediate supervisor concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and/or suggestions for new and improved ways of solving potential problems;
•Effectively responds to citizen questions, comments and concerns in a timely and professional manner;
•Communicates and coordinates regularly to maximize staff effectiveness and efficiency;
•Communicates information and states concerns in a clear and concise manner.


Job Specifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field or education equivalent to meet the needs of the position and 7+ years of golf course maintenance experience in a supervisory capacity, management of a municipal resource and budget; working with contractors and vendors on construction projects, or an equivalent combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
•Substantial knowledge of current golf course operations, maintenance and construction practices and procedures;
•Substantial knowledge of safe handling of chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides;
•Substantial knowledge of irrigation troubleshooting, repair and scheduling;
•Substantial knowledge of calibration for sprayers and spreaders;
•Substantial knowledge of water pump operations;
•Substantial knowledge of plant and insect life cycles and proper maintenance;
•Substantial knowledge of landscaping;
•Substantial knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
•Ability to diagnose turf/grass diseases and pests;
•Ability to effectively communicate with employees and the general public in both orally and written forms;
•Ability to communicate with other Departments to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations;
•Ability to make mathematical computations;
•Ability to move freely to inspect golf course grounds;
•Ability to operate motorized vehicles;
•Ability to act as a team player and use tact and diplomacy when dealing with citizen complaints;
•Ability to make decisions under pressure;
•Ability to understand and follow oral and written policies, procedures and instructions;
•Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
•Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under pressure and time sensitive deadlines;
•Ability to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge due to ever changing information and technology;
•Integrity in job performance;
•Proficient in computer skills in Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point.


Licensing and Certification:
•Possession of a valid State of Idaho driver’s license and safe driving record is required;
•Two-year Turf Management Certificate or equivalent training preferred;
•Certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA);
•Professional Applicator License OH, LS and OI.


Work Environment & Physical Demands:
•Principle duties and functions of this position are performed in both a general office and outdoor work environment.
•Frequently works near moving mechanical parts in outside weather conditions;
•Exposure to wet and or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.


Travel Requirements:
•Some travel to a variety of sites, etc. and attend meetings or training seminars is required.
