Job Summary:
This position performs a wide variety of grounds and facilities maintenance at the City of Meridian’s Water Resource Recovery Facility. Work includes mowing, landscaping, painting, sprinkler system maintenance/repair, fertilizer and pesticide chemical application. Position occasionally assists in basic plant operational/maintenance activities such as equipment service, equipment cleaning, and confined space entry attendant. Work is performed under general supervision and direction.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
•Performs varied grounds maintenance including weeding, mowing, raking, sweeping, trimming, pruning, removal and planting of trees, aerating and fertilizing lawns;
•Sets sprinklers, replaces broken sprinkler heads, and adjusts automatic time clocks;
•Maintains irrigation systems by repairing broken irrigation heads, valves, and pipe lines;
•Performs irrigation system pressure checks, determines irrigation schedules;
•Winterization of facility irrigation system;
•Sprays and fertilizes turf and trees;
•Maintains mowers and other related grounds equipment and tools;
•Performs seasonal snow and ice removal using hand tools and power equipment/ plows, brooms and trucks;
•Cleans, plant facilities including buildings, clarifiers, tanks, electrical rooms and other plant areas;
•Prepares and paints interior and exterior walls and buildings and equipment;
•Maintains fire lanes around buildings and property, and cleans debris from pathways, parking lots, and roof gutters;
•Under direct supervision, assist with basic plant operational and maintenance activities;
•Utilizes light to heavy equipment to load and unload trucks, dig trenches, lay pipes, haul dirt, repairs pipes, replace bedding materials, and compact soil;
•Safely operate a variety of equipment, machinery, hand and power tools, and trucks;
•May repair, overhaul, and reassemble small gasoline powered engines;
•Provides manual labor for the continued cleanliness and neat appearance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, facilities, equipment, and clarifiers;
•Ability to serve on cross-functional teams as necessary;
•Maintain work areas, tools, vehicles, and equipment in a clean, orderly, and safe condition;
•Perform work orders issued through INFOR computerized workorder program and ability to edit, create and close work orders;
•Drive City vehicles to purchase and pick up fuel, propane, needed parts and equipment as necessary;
•Perform other duties as assigned or needed.


Job Specifications:
•One-year experience performing landscaping or facilities maintenance or any combination of experience and training which demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.;


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
•Ability to perform varied facilities maintenance and cleaning;
•Must have knowledge of and ability to use pickup truck, backhoe, tractor, front-end loader, forklift,
trencher, welders, snow blower, push and riding lawn mower, roto-tiller, aerator, fertilizer spreader,
chainsaw, power hedge trimmer, weed eater, backpack blower, air compressor, drill press, shovels,
rakes and brooms;
•Ability to safely operate a wide variety of equipment and tools; safely utilize related protective gear and safety equipment;
•Ability to identify and prioritize additional tasks;
•Ability to interpret and follow application instructions for landscaping/grounds tree and shrub chemical maintenance;
•Basic working knowledge in keyboarding, word processing, database management, record filing and have proven skills in Microsoft Word and Outlook;
•Ability to utilize various types of equipment including a pickup truck, brushes, shovels, brooms, forklift, tractor, air compressor, front-end loader, mowers, trimmers, and other lawn equipment;
•Ability to utilize miscellaneous power tools for plant maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and cement finishing work;
•Ability to utilize chemical application spray units.
•Ability to make independent judgments and decisions and work under minimum direct supervision;
•Ability to work out of doors for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions;
•Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations;
•Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance;
•Complete assignments in a timely fashion;
•Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations;
•Maintain prompt and regular attendance;
•Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation;
•Must have working knowledge of industrial safety procedures and proper use of varied PPE such as: Personal Gas monitors, safety glasses, goggles, respirators, lockout tag-out, confined space entry etc.;
•Ability to work effectively as a team member;
•Communicate with others in written or verbal form to optimize effectiveness and efficiency of inter-departmental operations;


Licensing and Certification:
•Must hold a valid State of Idaho Driver’s License & safe driving record;
•Chemical application license desired;
•Must become certified on plant equipment (forklift, man lift, etc.) within 6 months of hire.
•Ability to obtain a Wastewater Treatment Operator Class 1 or Operator-in-Training (OIT) license within twelve months of meeting Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licenses eligibility requirements is desired;


Work Environment & Physical Demands:
•While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly working near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud;
•Frequently requires lifting and moving up to 50 pounds;
•Employees work in/at heights, confined spaces and are exposed to mechanical, electrical hazards;
•Employees work on stairs, expanded metal grates, uneven concrete walk ways, and rocky areas. Conditions may be icy, wet, and occasionally snow-covered
•Occasionally works in high precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration;
•Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids, and chemicals;
•Construction hazards during facility upgrades, including trenches, heavy equipment, and overhead dangers are present at the plant;
•Work is performed during all seasons, with extreme heat, winter ice and snow conditions, including winter driving being part of the work environment;
•Requires driving a motorized vehicle or maintenance equipment;


Travel Requirements:
•Drives a City motor vehicle to other City sites and other local areas.
